Graesse II, 424. Second edition of one of the major works by Doni with slight changes to the first printing in 1552 and now for the first time with a very useful index. The work contains a stange mixture of gossip, anecdotes, political traetises, essays on gastronomy, wine and customs at the table, superstition, the printing of books etc. Grendler (Critics of the Italian World) explains the title as: "Things overheard on the marble steps" while sitting on the stairs of Santa Reparata in Florence. The dialogue about the art of printing at the beginning of the second book is actualy by Domenichi who critized Done very sharply when publishing it in a book of his own in 1562. - Very little browning, endpaper with an older quote from Aristophanes, few spots but mostly clean inside, upper corners bumped, else nice.
