Graesse II, 424. Second edition of one of the major works by Doni with slight changes to the first printing in 1552 and now for the first time with a very useful index. The work contains a stange mixture of gossip, anecdotes, political traetises, essays on gastronomy, wine and customs at the table, superstition, the printing of books etc. Grendler (Critics of the Italian World) explains the title as: "Things overheard on the marble steps" while sitting on the stairs of Santa Reparata in Florence. The dialogue about the art of printing at the beginning of the second book is actualy by Domenichi who critized Done very sharply when publishing it in a book of his own in 1562. 
- Very little browning, endpaper with an older quote from Aristophanes, few spots but mostly clean inside, upper corners bumped, else nice.

VII, 740, 44, 4; ADB I, 161f. Erste deutsche Ausgabe der sieben Satiren Ariosts, die zwischen 1517 und 1525 verfasst, aber erst ein Jahr nach seinem Tod 1534 erstmals gedruckt wurden. In deutscher Sprache hatte Jagemann nur einige Auszüge veröffentlicht. Ahlwardt (1760 - circa 1830), Lehrer in Demmin und später Professor der klassischen Philologie in Greifswald, bietet hier erstmals eine vollständige Versübersetzung mit vielen Erklärungen in den Fussnoten, sowie einer Einführung zu Ariosts Leben und Werk. 
- Etwas gebräunt oder fleckig und berieben. Das fehlende Titelblatt gut ergänzt, sonst komplett.

Zt. mit Rückenvergoldung, Deckel mit dekoriertem Glanzpapierbezug Massgebliche, überarbeitete und teils neu übersetzte Ausgabe durch den Juristen und Kenner der frühen italienischen Literatur Karl Witte (1800-1883), der als einer der grössten Dante-Forscher gilt. Im Vorwort erklärt er, dass er aus Zeitgründen bei der ersten Auflage, die zwischen 1827 und 1830 erschienen war, nur die ersten vier Bücher selbst übertragen habe. Der Verlag habe dann einen anderen "in der deutschen Literatur wohlbekannten Schriftsteller" beauftragt, die Teile fünf bis zehn zu besorgen. In dieser neuen Ausgabe stammten nun auch die Bücher fünf und sechs von Witte in neuer Übersetzung, die übrigen Bücher seien alle sorgfältig überarbeitet. - Hübsche Bände aus einer Adelsbibliothek, leider jedoch alle Gelenke mit etwas Wurmfrass am Leder, dabei solide. Innen etwas gebräunt und leicht stockig. Einbände leicht berieben, Rücken hübsch.

There are several further poems by various authors dedicated to him, the editor of the whole works is Giovanni Albano. On the title page a large woodcut of Magalotti.

The incident is supposed to have really happened in 1409, a first publication appeared in the year 1516. Here the Florentine scholar Domenico Manni (1690-1788) collects all available material from the archives and tries to reconstruct the story of the historic carpenter Manetto.

With many contemporary documents from the archives, letters by friends and patrons, relations about the town Correggio (Emilia-Romagna), fellow artists etc. The historian Luigi Pungileoni (1765-1854) taught at the universities of Urbino and Rome. - This copy does not have the two plates showing frescos in volume two that seem to have never been bound in (price decidedly reduced for this reason). Otherwise a very nice set from the library of the princes of Fuerstenberg in Donauseschingen with their armorial stamp on the titles. 
- Only very minor browning, just a little rubbed. Very nice and decorative set.
