history - Japanese postwar Society: .[American Periodical for occupied Japan:] TIMES. - A FORTNIGHTLY, Volume I, Number 2, June 1 1946: 'Europe in Resurrection'; 'Laugh and Relax'; 'Science in Atomic Age: A-Bomb Test in Bikini'; '[American] Frats and Non-Frats'; 'Topics around the Globe'; 'News from [American] Stateside'; 'College Sororities'; . . . Japan, 1946. 33 (1) pages, with few illustrations; Texts American or Japanese, each which translational-aid for the other language, incl. American-Japanese glossary. - Publisher's photographically illustrated wrapper; 8vo.(19 x 12 cm).
*** RARE - AND RATHER WEIRD - AMERICAN PERIODICAL FOR THE JUST DEFEATED COUNTRY OF JAPAN, REPRESENTING THE 'CONQUERER'S ATTITUDE'. - Quite cynical towards the country with its recent experiences of being hit by 2 atomic bombs is the by far longest section of the magazine (5 pages) on A-Bomb-Tests in Bikini right after the - not too funny - Jokes-page: it lenghtly describes in 13 steps why for meteorological reasons the tests will happen next month, how (ridicously) the military and civil staff there will 'protect' themselves (e.g.: 7. ''For a minute after the explosion, all observers and crew members who have goggles made of exposed photographic film will continue to wear them, Those not equipped with goggles will turn their backs to the explosion, close their eyes, and protect them with their arms. / 8. None of the personnel will wear special clothing to guard against radioactivity. Each man will use a badge of photographic film which by exposure will warn him away from any radioactive area [but where?], and each will carry a Geiger-counter to measure radioactivity.'') and how the aftermath will be surveyed from air and sea. It closes with step 13: ''Scientist also think that radioactivity in the water may not last for more than two days . . . [Other] elements most likely to be made radioactive . . . will last only a few hours.''! Other articles relate to society customs and political affairs, almost like to civilize and educate the 'islanders'(the Japanese, not the 'Bikinis'). * The frontwrapper is carries the large portrait of James F. Byrnes, former 'Director of the Office of War Mobilization', then 'United States Secretary of State' which corresponds to a Minister of Foreign affaires and names him ''Big-Time Worker of World-Politics''. - Minimally used; A VERY GOOD COPY OF THE FRAGILE PUBLICATION.
