This is a pioneering catalogue in a field of collecting that only just began at the time of its publication. There are the famous Sherlock Holmes stories by Conan Doyle or works by Jules Verne but also many rare and unknown authors. As the preface declares: "In this catalogue we have deliberately ignored several of the great masters.. as being already well known to collectors". |

Strand . where any sketch that is fair game will have due Honor shewn." - We quote the commentary of M.Dorothy George in "Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum", V, 1935: "Macklin appeared, 3 October 1773, as Macbeth, the part being played for the first time in Scottish dress, before a very hostile audience, who expected to be "spectators of his downfall", thinking his age would not allow him to go through the part to the end. "Lady Macbeth's modern robes by no means accorded with the habits of the other personages, and Mr. Macklin's flowing curls, like the locks of an Adonis, were unpardonably out of character". |
