The Hague and Leiden, widow of Engelbrecht Boucquet and sons, Jan van der Deyster, and Boudewijn and Pieter van der Aa, 1727. 8 vols. 1mo and folio. With 7 (of 8) engraved frontispieces (lacking that of volume 4), 4 engraved dedications, 117 engraved maps on 61 leaves, 7 engraved plates and 502 engravings in text. Further with 127 (of 128) title-pages (including a general title-page, a title-page to 7 (of 8) volumes, lacking that of volume 4, and 118 for the separate works). Volume 1-3 & 5-8: contemporary mottled calf, gold-tooled spine and board edges; volume 4: modern calf.
Large paper copy of the so-called "folio-edition" (although here mostly printed as 1mo) of Van der Aa's voluminous collection of important voyages to the East and West Indies and other countries, undertaken by all European countries, other than the Dutch. Including voyages by Acosta, Balbi, Cabot, Cavendish, Chester, Columbus, Cortes, Coutinho, Da Cunha, Drake, Evesko, Frobisher, Gallonye, Da Gama, Garay, Garcia, Gilbert, Jenkinson, Harcourt, Herberer, Magallanes, Mildenhal and Cartwright, Mouette, Petelin and Andrasko, Raleigh, Saris, De Soto, etc. - The work is falsely attributed on the title-page to Johan Lodewijk Gottfried, by Van der Aa, most likely because he made good money publishing Gottfried's "Chronicle" in 1702. In reality Gottfried had nothing to do with the present work. The work was edited and co-published by Pieter van der Aa, known for his ambitious projects. Where other publishers were primarily concerned about the profits, Van der Aa wanted to publish outstanding books. For the present series of travels he either reused and revised older Dutch translations or had the original accounts translated for the first time into Dutch. In 1706 he already started publishing the translated voyages both in small (8vo) and large instalments (folio or 1mo), and a year later he published a 28-volume set of the 8vo editions. The folio editions were afterwards issued and divided in four large collections of two volumes each. The present issue, is a reissue of these four collections with their own independent title-pages and frontispieces, and ads a new general title-page and list of subscribers. - While all sets seem to be described as "folio" the present set is printed mainly as 1mo, with some occasional quires in folio. And as the large editions of the two volume sets were available on normal paper (80 guilders) and on large paper (100 guilders; Hoftijzer, p. 43), it seems very likely the present set is one printed on large paper. All leaves are unwatermarked and the 1mo leaves are only slightly trimmed (measuring 396 x 238 mm with the tranchefiles often still visible) the folio leaves are trimmed more and don't have visible tranchefiles. The fourth volume is from a different set which is trimmed down much more, but also combines both 1mo and folio leaves. - Some occasional spots, a couple minor restorations and a few wormholes; a very good set, but with the fourth volume from a different and heavily trimmed set (though printed on the same large paper), in a modern binding and lacking the frontispiece and the title-page to the volume. The seven volumes with contemporary bindings slightly worn along the extremities and with some minor wear on the sides, but otherwise very good. - Cordier (Sinica) 1942f. Muller, America 1889. Sabin 3 (note). Tiele, Bibl. 10. For Van der Aa: P.G. Hoftijzer, Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733), Leids drukker en boekverkoper (1999).

Aaronsohn, Aaron / Oppenheimer, Hillel: Tsemah 'Ever Ha-Yarden: mifkad bikoret li-tsemahim asher ne'esfu u-miktsatam hugderu 'al yede Aharon Aharonson be-meshekh mas'otav (1904-1908) be-'Ever ha-Yarden uva-'Aravah. Zichron Yaakov, Ma'sav (privately published), 1934. 8vo. (8), 384 pp. Cloth-backed red boards with title inked on spine, likely privately bound.
Very rare privately published botanical text on the famous expedition of the Jewish agronomist Aaron Aaronsohn (1876-1919) through the Anti-Lebanon mountain range and his subsequent discovery of what was claimed to be the oldest wild wheat, ancestor of all farmed wheat today. - While the exact line of descent of modern wheat is contested and complex, Aaronsohn's wheat - wild emmer - was indeed ancient, and its discovery remains a landmark moment in historical botany and the study of the history of human civilization. Like much of Aaronsohn's work, his detailed notes on the wild wheat distribution and other botanical notes on the landscapes he surveyed were published posthumously by Aaronsohn's family. The text includes numerous scientific names and an index, plus 13 botanical designs and 38 photoplates documenting the expedition. A folding map at the rear is titled "Aaronsohn's travels in Jordan and the distribution of wild wheat in the land of Israel". Largely in Hebrew, supplemented with scientific Latin, this Hebrew version is very uncommon, as Aaronsohn's work was originally published in French as "Florula transiordanica: révision critique des plantes récoltées et partiellement determinées", also by his family, in 1931. - Binding bumped at extremeties; a few library stamps to title-page, along with some minor paper repairs. Altogether in good condition. - OCLC 42945306.

Abah, Yousab El: [Collection of Essays]. Egypt, [1869 CE =] 1585 AM. 4to (173 x 225 mm). 368 ff. Arabic manuscript on watermarked paper. Black naskh script with important words and titles in red, and red highlights and section markers throughout. Contemporary red morocco ruled in blind.
A large manuscript of the teachings of the Coptic bishop and saint Yousab El Abah (d. 1826), literally "Yousab the Hoarse", whose twenty-nine essays and speeches span his theological sermons and philosophy. Before he became a bishop, Yousab was a member of the famous desert Monastery of St Anthony, located in an oasis in Egypt's Eastern Desert. While today a popular tourist and pilgrimage destination among Egyptian Christians and accessible by car from Cairo in six hours, in Yousab's day the monastery was ascetic and remote, built near the cave of St Anthony. Yousab himself is said to have returned to the monastery at the end of his life and been buried there. - His teachings, written in Arabic, are collected here by a scribe working only forty-three years after the author's death. Yousab had many occasions to teach and speak publicly as well as write the twenty-nine essays found in this manuscript, as he likely gave funeral orations upon the deaths of at least two Coptic popes. - Covers rather worn, spine professionally repaired. Some soiling and staining (including the occasional splatter of wax), one small chip with no loss to text.

'Abd al-Wahid al-Marrakushi / Dozy, Reinhart Pieter Anne (ed.): (Kitab al-Mu'jib fi talkhis akhbar ahl al-Maghrib). The history of the Almohades, preceded by a sketch of the history of Spain, from the time of the conquest till the reign of Yusof ibn-Ta'shifi'n, and of the history of the Almoravides. Now first edited from a MS. in the Library of Leyden, the only one extant in Europe. Leyden, S. & J. Luchtmans, 1847. 8vo. XXII, 290, 8 pp. Contemporary full blue cloth with remains of a printed spine title.
First edition. Entitled "The Book of Wonder, or the Summary of News of the Maghreb", this is the best-known work of the Moroccan historian 'Abd al-Wahid (1185-1250): a personal and at the same time neutral account of Almohad rule from its foundation to the 13th century, but also of the preceding dynasty of the Almoravids, with a summary of al-Andalus history from the Muslim conquest until 1224. The book is written in a lighthearted spirit with many anecdotes; 'Abd al-Wahid explained that his intention was to inform and entertain the students in a summarized way since academic history books tend to be overly lengthy which can sometimes bore the reader. The work also contains valuable information about 'Abd al-Wahid's contemporary Ibn Rushd (Averroes), whom he may have known personally, as well as information directly taken from the Almohad archives, various princes and accounts of events that the author witnessed. A number of details point to Egypt as the place of writing, and the author himself states that he completed the work on 15 July 1224. Dozy's important edition of the Leyden MS. was republished in 1881. - Corners and spine-ends a little bumped. Occasional quite insignificant foxing; uncut and untrimmed as issued. Provenance: removed from the library of Carberry Tower, the Scottish castle mansion owned by the Elphinstone family from the 1860s to the 1960s, with bookplate and shelfmark to front pastedown. - GAL I, 322. For Dozy's editions of historical texts on the history of Muslim Spain see Fück, p. 182.

'Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Ma'ali al-Mahfuf al-Munajjim: Kashf al-asrar wa Kifayat al-Akhyar fi ilm al-Tanjim wa Ma'rifat Manazil al-Shams wal-Qamar [Revealing the Secrets and Sufficient for the Good on the Science of Astrology and the Stages of the Sun and the Moon]. Uzbekistan, ca. 1880 CE. 8vo (135 x 187 mm). 51 ff. Arabic manuscript on paper. Black naskh script ruled in red, with important words and phrases picked out in red. Contemporary leather and marbled paper.
A previously unknown and unrecorded divination manual by 'Abd ibn Abi al-Munajjim (d. ca. 1397 CE), an author remembered for his work on geomancy. The manuscript describes the divinatory implications of various astrological events. Little is known about the author, and this manuscript is the only extant copy of this particular text. The identity of a former copyist, however, suggests that this was once a well-respected piece of astrological literature: according to the colophon, this manuscript was copied from one penned in 1140 H (1727/28 CE) by Abd al-Qadir bin Mahmud, whose title, "Munejjim-bashi", identifies him as one of the chief astrologers of the Ottoman Empire, a powerful and respected post. - The work itself provides a tidily organized handbook of divination, with chapters dedicated to the sighting of atmospheric phenomena like lightning and thunder, or of astronomical observations, such as solar and lunar eclipses. Each chapter goes on to predict the effect of each of these events during each month: lightning in January has a different meaning than in February, and so on. Similarly, a chapter on winds discusses what different winds during different months might mean for the future. Other chapters make predictions based on the day on which a given month begins: for example, if Muharram starts on Monday, then the astrologer's predicted outcome is different than if Muharram starts on Tuesday. - A useful compendium of astrological divination, straightforwardly arranged as a simple and easy-to-use reference tool for the astrologer tasked with interpretations.

Abdülaziz, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1830-1876, ruled 1861-1876): Ottoman Izn-i Sefine [Sailing Permission] Firman. Konstantiniyye [Istanbul], [13 November 1873 CE =] 20 Sab'an 1873. Ca. 560 x 800 mm. Ottoman Turkish manuscript with large Tughra. 1 page. Black ink on single sheet of sturdy, polished laid paper.
A firman granting a British ship access to the Black Sea shores through the Bosphorus. - These types of firmans are known as "izn-i sefine" (sailing permissions) and were first issued during the reign of Mehmed II, following the conquest of Istanbul. Since the 16th century, foreign ships were not allowed to pass through the Black Sea, and sailing permissions were not issued. Russia was the first country to receive the privilege of trade using its own ships in the Black Sea in 1774, which was followed by Austria in 1783, and France and England in 1802. Following the Treaty of Adrinople, the Black Sea was generally opened to international trade in 1829. However, ships still would need an "izn-i sefine" firman to pass through the Dardanelles or Bosphorus straits, at a fee of 300 coins. - Browning, folding marks.

Abdülhamid II, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1842-1918, ruled 1876-1909): Imperial Hejaz berat certificate for Mehmed Suleyman Pasha. Kostantiniyye (Istanbul), [16 Sep. 1905 CE =] 16 Rajab 1323. 320 x 570 mm. Lithographed form in gilt, filled in with black ink sprinkled with mica flakes. Tughra of the sultan at the head.
To Seyh Mehmed Suleyman Pasha: a berat certificate awarding a gold medal in appreciation of his support for and contribution to the building of the Hejaz railway. The document reads, in translation: "I ordered the construction of the railway from Damascus to Mecca and Medina in order to facilitate the journey of the pilgrims who wish to attain the forgiveness of Allah. A medal of various classes was established to reward men and women who helped by providing financial aid to this railway construction or by working in construction. Seyh Mehmed Suleyman Pasha, an Algerian notable and scholar, assisted in the construction of the railway. For this reason, he was awarded the Hejaz Railway Gold Medal. In accordance with law and my imperial edict, I order the above-named person to be awarded a gold medal. Accordingly, this document has been written on 16 Rajab 1323". - Berat certificates were official documents issued by the Sultan to grant a privilege, to appoint dignitaries, or to confer the right to possession of a property belonging to the state. Many donation campaigns were launched during the construction of the Hejaz railway, and Sultan Abdülhamid II himself made a donation of 50,000 liras to encourage others. The Hejaz Railway Medal and certificate were awarded to benefactors who donated a certain amount or contributed in the building of the railway. This medal was issued in gold, silver and nickel versions: nickel was given to those who donated 5 to 50 gold coins, silver to those who donated 50 to 100 gold coins, and gold to those who donated more than 100 gold coins. - Folded with light edge flaws; minor stains. On the reverse are the official seal (dated 1321/1903) and signatures. Numbered 259/724. Full transcription available.
