Titelbeschreibung

Rowlandson, Thomas: Fünfzig erotische Grotesken. Handkolorierte Lichtdruck-Reproduktionen in der Größe der Originale. Mit einem Geleitwort von Cary von Karwath.

[d.i. Wien, C.W. Stern, 1907]. 4°. 6 Bll. (Titel, Inhalt, Vorwort), 50 kolorierten Tafeln unter 50 betitelten Seidenhemdchen. Original Halbpergamentband mit goldgepr. Rückentitel u. Ornamenten.

II, 768). Obere Gelenke leicht angerissen und Pergament leicht angestaubt. Innen quasi makellos. Sehr gutes, komplettes Exemplar dieser seltenen Folge. Polunbi 79 ("unbrauchbar zu machen"). Hayn-Got. IX, 511. Englisch, Irrgarten, S. 80. ---------------------------------------- Rowlandson, Thomas. Fifty erotic grotesques. Hand-colored reproductions in the size of the originals. With a foreword by Cary of Karwath. Publication of the Austrian Society of Bibliophiles [i.e.Vienna, C. W. Stern, 1907]. 4vo. 6 pp. (title, content, preface) and 50 coloured plates covered with titled pergament paper (serpants). Original half-parchment binding with gold-stamped title and ornamental motifs on the spine. One of 564 numbered copies on copperplate paper (total number of copies: 600), a private edition produced exclusively for subscribers. Includes all silk tissue pages, each bearing typographic titles in German. In addition to the introduction, it also contains a list of the illustration titles. The work was banned and confiscated immediately upon publication. No wonder, for Rowlandsons' erotic work is as unambiguously risqué as it is subtly humorous - and, moreover, coloured in bold hues. 'It is an endless procession of robust vigour, often rough and boorish, the expression of an exceedingly strong primitive sensuality' (Bilder-Lex. II, 768). Upper joints slightly torn and the parchment slightly dusty. Inside virtually immaculate. A very good, complete copy of this rare series. Polunbi 79 ("to render unusable"). Hayn-Got. IX, 511. English, Irrgarten, p. 80.
