Following the treatment of elementary education under the so-called oiaiiiniiiticiis in Book One, Quintilian proceeds to the discussion of the second stage of instruction, provided by the teacher of rhetoric. He gives important insights into the way teaching was conducted in a rhetorical school in Rome C. 1 AD. and discusses the various elementary rhetorical exercises one by one, thus providing parallel evidence to numerous extant Greek treatises on the subject. Further subjects covered include supervised readingas an exercise and declamation practice,an important influence on literary texts. The first half of the Book ends with an elaborate attack on orators and teachers of rhetoric who hold that rhetoric should be taught and practised as an art of improvisation, not in Quintilian?s way as a technical discipline grounded in theoretical precepts, eventually to be absorbed by the pupil. The second half of the Book is then concerned with Quintilians theoretical conception of rhetoric, which underpins the large collection of rhetorical precepts which form the body of the work.
